A Fine Brass-Bound Rosewood Writing Box inscribed 'Blandford Neighbor, December 9, 1850'
This beautiful writing box was presented to Mr. Neighbor, a Yeoman of the City of London, on his 21st birthday on Dec. 9, 1850. The contents include two silver plated glass inkwells, the original keys, a wax impression, a small round and flat lignum vitae box with trade label of 'A.B. Savory, Cornhill, London, Goldsmiths,' a funeral prayer book printed for the funeral of Mr. Neighbor on July 25, 1881, Indenture papers with wax impressions apprenticing Mr. Neighbor to William Simpson, Cordwainer, in 1847, a certificate admitting Mr. Neighbor to the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers in January 1854 and various personal letters. The box measures 20" wide by 11 1/2" deep and 9 1/4" high. It also has several secret drawers and compartments. The lock is signed 'Bramah.' The box also has a side mounted drawer locked from the inside. The leather writing surface is not original. Overall a very high quality box with an interesting ownership
