Item Title:

A Napoleonic period (circa 1810-1815) Royal Horse Artillery Officers' Three-draw Telescope by Gilbert & Sons, London, owned by Lt. Fuller

Item Description:

This fine and historic telescope was made by William Gilbert and Sons, London, circa 1806 - 1818. It comes with what appears to be its' original leather carrying case. Historical note: The Royal Horse Artillery was formed soon after the British declared war on the French in 1793. It was formed to provide mobile fire support for the British cavalry. The Royal Horse Artillery's horses were not used for cavalry charges, but to tow guns into action. In 1801 the Royal Irish Artillery was amalgamated into it--this gave a total of 12 Royal Horse Artillery troops. They fought valiantly in the Napoleonic Wars and this telescope was most likely used during this period.
