Item Title: An Important Sterling Silver-Gilt Field Marshall's Baton on Stand Presented to Field Marshall Edmund Allenby, November 11, 1925
Item Description: Absolutely spectacular and monumental. Presented to a hero of World War I by the Town of Ramsgate in the County of Kent, this is normally referred to as a "Freedom Box." The stand is adorned with the Coat-of-Arms of Ramsgate flanked by swag of flags with a tank on one end and a howitzer on the other side. The elaborate engraved baton rests on two pairs of dolphins. Below are four hand painted enamels depicting various scenes in Palestine, Eygpt and Israel in the Middle East, where Allenby (1861-1936) oversaw all the operations in that theatre of war. The entire piece sits on top of six solid silver gilt resting lions. In fact, all the metal parts are hallmarked English sterling silver. Overall length: 23 1/2". This piece truly belongs in the British Army Museum.
