A RARE 19th century ANTIQUE SCRIMSHAW WhaleIvory Seam Rubber dated 1841
Measuring 4" long, this rare seam rubber is made entirely from whale's tooth. The handle has the initials "A A" and the date 1841. The middle section of the stem has previously been broken and there is a small piece 1/2" by 1/4" missing. The wedge shows old dryness and age cracks but is sound. NOTE: This piece comes from a long deceased collector (1874-1940) of whaling artifacts who lived in Mattapoisett, MA., and who was also a director of the Old Dartmouth Historical Society (now known as the New Bedford Whaling Museum) from 1919-1940. Much of his collection went to the museum upon his death in 1940. This piece, along with many more now in our gallery, has NEVER BEEN ON THE MARKET since it was acquired circa 1900-1920.
