Item Title: A fine Sea Service Flintlock Blunderbuss by John Vaughan dated 1741
Item Description: This very nice 1741 dated example has a 15 1/2" round brass barrel flared at the muzzle with a 1 3/8" diameter. It has a beautiful highly figured walnut stock showing only minor dings and dents. It is mounted with the traditional Board of Ordnance brass hardware. The lockplate is signed "VAUGHAN 1741" and has the crown of King George II over "G R." Under the frizzen is the Royal Navy broad arrow stamp. The barrel is inscribed "LONDON." Making this blunderbuss even more interesting is the later (circa 1770) inscription on the barrel "LONDON & BRIGHTON No. 16". It is clear that when this blunderbuss was taken out of the Sea Service it went into the Royal Coaching Service, hence the inscription. This highly travelled and popular route was rife with highwaymen and coach and mail protection was critical at this time. Historical note: John Vaughan was Contractor to Ordnance from 1704 to 1742. He was elected Master of the Gunmaker's Company in 1737 and died in 1746.
