Title: A 19th century Ship Captain's 'Hailing' Trumpet with presentation inscription dated 1845
Description: Measuring 18" long, this ship captain's speaking or hailing trumpet appears to be made of silver and is inscribed as follows: "Presented to Capt. Hans Holdt, Commander of Danish Ship Pollux of Apenrade as a Token of esteem and friendship, Schmidt & Balchen, New York November 1845." At the bottom is the name of the maker or retailer 'A P Thompson, 309 1/2 Broadway, N Y'. Below the inscription is a coat-of-arms, probably European. Apenrade was part of Prussia at that time and this may be a Prussian coat-of-arms. Condition: The curved mouthpiece has been dented and is slightly askew. There are also about 4-5 other smaller dents but none of them are serious or detract from the attractiveness of this rare speaking trumpet.
