Title: An English Revolutionary War period blunderbuss with spring mounted bayonet by Joseph Heylin of London circa 1775-1780.
Description: Measuring 30" long, this is the earliest spring mounted bayonet blunderbuss that I have ever seen!! This nice brass barreled example has a three-stage brass barrell going from octagonal to round to cannon style and ending with a muzzle diameter of 1 1/2". The barrel is stamped with two proof marks and the lockplate is inscribed Heylin, for Joseph Heylin, Gunmaker "at the Cross Guns," Cornhill, London. Heylin was elected 'Master' of the Gunmakers' Company in 1777. The brass mounts include a 'rococco' style pierced side plate, a RARE "Bannister rail" butt stock plate, trigger guard and escutcheon. The spring mounted bayonet is on the top and is in good working order although a little tight. Overall condition is very good. There is a small 1/4" piece of wood missing at the bottom edge of the butt plate and an oval grain crack in the same area. The mechanics are fine.
