A 19th century Sailor-made inlaid mahogany ANTIQUE Pocket Watch Stand, probably Nantucket circa 1840

This charming pocket watch stand is inlaid with whalebone, ivory, satinwood, rosewood and ebony. Provenance: The Ernest Gates Collection. Formerly curator of the whaling collection at the JIBBOOM Club in New London, CT. The club was formed in the 1870's as a social club for captains of whaling ships. It was disbanded in 1959. The MYSTIC SEAPORT MUSEUM now has much of Mr. Gates' collection.
