A FABULOUS PAIR of Flintlock travelling pistols made by H W MORTIMER, GUN MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY, circa 1782-1790.

SOLD

In absolutely wonderful condition retaining more than half of their original bluing on the steel mounts and virtually all of their original finish on the walnut stocks. These pistols are the smallest examples I have seen and must have been made for a gentleman or young man with small hands. Features include locks with waterproof pans, bridled frizzens, platinum lined touch holes and sliding safeties. The octagonal smooth bore 4" barrels have damascus pattern and are in .48 cal. The top of each barrel is engraved "H W MORTIMER, GUN MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY." The lockplate is also engraved H W MORTIMER, 89 FLEET STREET (Mortimer worked at that address from 1782 to the early 1790's). The triggerguards are beautifully engraved and have pineapple finials. The tailpipe and ramrod ferule are also engraved. The rosewood ramrods are original and have horn tips. The wedge escutcheons are of silver as are the escutcheons behind the barrel tang. The walnut grips are finely checkered and end with starburst carved geometric butcaps. This is truly a wonderful little set of Mortimer pistols worthy of any museum collection.
