A Fine 19th century cased Sextant by Samuel Browning of Portsmouth circa 1847

SOLD

The index scale is inlaid with a silver band and is inscribed "S.J. Browning late Stebbing, Optician to her Majesty, 66 High Street, Portsmouth." Samuel John Browning took over the business from George Stebbing in about 1846 and this fine instrument dates to shortly thereafter (circa 1847). Due to the outstanding quality of his instruments, he was rewarded with a Royal warrant allowing him to state that he was 'Optician to Her Majesty.' The sextant itself has a bronze frame and is mounted with brass fittings. The grip on the back is made of ebony. Of the six colored glass filters, two are missing. All three sighting tubes are original. The original fitted mahogany case is dovetailed and has a beautiful color and patina and retains its' original brass clasps. The magnifyer is sharp and clear. Overall, a wonderful example from the Golden Age of sail.
