A Fine American Silver-Hilted Mounted Officer's Saber circa 1810-1815

SOLD

The 31" curved blade is of British origin and is engraved with gilt etched patterns and military motifs. One one side is etched "US of A" and the other side has the owner's initials in script "MGJW." The silver 'D' form hilt, probably American made, has the langet chased with a spread eagle, the quillon with an eagle's head finial and the gripstrap/bird's head pommel is chased with scroll work and laurels. The elephant ivory grip is checkered on one side and has very minor edge chips and age cracks. The blade shows some light areas of pitting but is in very good overall condition. Provenance: the William Guthman collection.
