A Fine and Early Ebony Octant inscribed 'Made by John Gilbert on Tower Hill, London, for Capt. William McNeill, February 20, 1766.'

A rare early dated octant made for a Captain. This handsome example is in exceptional condition given its' age. The 18" index arm is made of ebony with the lower portion brass. The octant retains its' original ivory vernier, scale, pencil and notepad. The eyepiece has double peep holes and pivoting cover. Also present are the front and back horizon glasses, two movable shades and backsight. The condition of everything is excellent. John Gilbert worked on Tower Hill from 1751 until he died in 1791.
