A fine and rare 18th Century ivory inlaid and brass mounted ebony Octant having its 18 1/4" index arm engraved "Thomas Broderick 1790."

This wonderful example is in near 'mint' condition showing little if any use over the past 220 years. All the brass parts retain their original lacquer finish and everything is sharp and crisp. The 18 1/4" index arm is beautifully inscribed in script "Thomas Broderick 1790" who was most likely the original owner. The eyepiece has double peep holes and a pivoting cover. There are two horizon glasses, a backsight and three movable shades. The top mounted tangent screw allows for fine adjustment of the ivory venier. the ivory inlays include the scale, blank nameplate, pencil, notepad and three unusual diamond shaped inlays in the frame. The original stepped case has a fine trade label as well as a meticulously hand written set of directions for using a sextant. Overall, the single best 18th century octant that I have ever seen!
