This impressive and early mariners' octant is made of mahogany with an inlaid boxwood 90 degree scale and name plate. The 20" brass index arm is engraved in script "Heath and Wing, London." They were in partnership between 1751 and 1771 and had their shop near Exeter Exchange in the Strand in London. This particular piece may well be the finest surviving instrument that they ever made.
