A FINE AND RARE PRESENTATION CAPTAIN'S SPYGLASS MADE BY GILBERT & CO., LONDON, CIRCA 1795

Complete with its' original fitted case and extra high-powered lens. The scope had its' mounts silvered for presentation purposes. The draw tube is signed "Gilbert & Co., London, 148 Leadenhall Street, Improved Day or Night." The scope is 24" long closed and opens to 42". The inner lid in inscribed Capt. Macleod, SKYE, for the Isle of Skye, Scotland, where the Clan Macleod ruled for nearly 800 years. The scope eventually ended up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where it remained for nearly 200 years. the inner lid is also inscribed "Nye a sailor shall obtrude upon this glass without knowing the pains such mischief bring." The mahogany barrel is wrapped on both ends with red, white and blue silk thread. A seldom seen historical cased spyglass with a wonderful history!
