A fine and rare Royal Navy flintlock blunderbuss by William Sheppard dated 1742

William Sheppard (1715-1776) specialized in making brass barrelled blunderbusses and cannons for the Royal Navy. This particular example has survived in a wonderful state of preservation. The overall length of the gun measures 32" and incorporates a 16" round barrel which terminates in a cannon form muzzle. The lock plate is quite exceptional with Sheppard's name boldly engraved with the date 1742 below. Equally impressive is the deep and bold engaving of the Crown of King George II above the initials G R. To the right of the crown is an equally fine and bold Royal Navy broad arrow stamp. The full length walnut stock retains its' original finish and shows only the expected minor dents and scuffs from being taken in and out of the ship's gun racks. The brass fold over butt plate is standard Royal Navy issue and has a lovely old patina. The horn tipped ramrod is of the period and may be original. In summary, this 1742 dated blunderbuss is amongst the best I have seen. Note: The gun has yet to be cleaned professionally. The photos show remnants of old brass cleaner which can easily be removed.
