A fine Mariner's ebony framed octant with its' original stepped oak case circa 1800-1820 sold by Frederick W. Lincoln of Boston circa 1840-1850

This early 19th century mariner's octant has its ivory scale going from -2 degrees to 100 degrees. The brass index arm measures 14" long. Included is the original bone or ivory pencil. There are three brass feet on the back for supporting the octant when it is in its' box. The classic stepped oak box appears to retain its' original black paint. The inside of the lid has a wonderful trade label in the form of a compass rose. The label is for Frederick W. Lincoln (1817-1898), one of Boston's premier retailer and manufacturer of nautical instruments. Lincoln was the great grandson of Paul Revere and served as Mayor of Boston during the Civil War from 1857-1864. Condition: The octant is in completely original condition with all of its horizon and index sun shades. The only thing that is missing is the small inset ivory notepad on one of its' arms. The octant was most likely made in England but eventually made its way to America where Lincoln bought and subsequently resold it.
