A late 18th or early 19th century steel barreled FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS by H.W. Mortimer, London, Gun Maker to His Majesty, King George III.

"H W Mortimer, LONDON, Gun-Maker to His Majesty" is inlaid in gold on the top of the barrel near the cock. His name also appears on the lockplate. The gun was made by the father who was appointed Gun-Maker to King George III in 1783. The gun dates to sometime between 1783 and 1810. His address of 89 Fleet Street is engraved on the side plate. The 22" barrel terminates with a flared muzzle having a 1.75" bore. The gun retains its' oriignal steel ramrod. The top of the brass butt plate is engraved with a 'trophy of arms' and suggests that it was made for the military. The brass trigger guard is engraved with a 'Tudor' rose and ends withan acorn finial. The gun ia slso mounted with sling hooks, again suggesting military use. The stock is made of dense grain European walnut. There is a 6" repaired crack on the left side of the forestock.
