A 'Mint condition' William D. Appleton signed Nantucket Lightship Basket circa 1880-1890.

In 'as new' condition, this unbelievable NANTUCKET lightship basket with the original paper label of William D. Appleton was made while he served onboard the New South Shoal Lightship. The ship was retired in 1892 so this basket was obviously made prior to then. The condition of the basket is perfect with no breaks. What is fascinating is the appearance of different colored layers in the rattan which make this basket so different from other Nantucket baskets. This piece clearly belongs in a museum.
