A RARE document signed in 1799 by EDWARD PREBLE, USN Commodore, Capt. of the USS Constitution, Hero of Tripoli and one of America's greatest Naval Heroes

Thid rare document measuring 2.75" by 7.75" reads "Given on board the United States Brig Pickering at St. Batholomew, 21 May 1799, Edward Preble." It is a very bold signature with a lovely flourish below. This was signed during Preble's first command which was to protect American commerce during the Quasi-War with France. Along with the document is a 6.5" by 3.75" early 19th century engraving of Preble with his facsimile signature below. HISTORICAL NOTE: While commanding aboard his flagship, the USS Constitution, in Tripoli during the Barbary Wars of 1803-1804, Stephen Decatur, William Bainbridge, Isaac Hull, James Lawrence and David Porter all served under his command. All were to become famous Naval heroes in their own right during the war of 1812. All attributed their heroism to the inspirational role that Preble played in their careers.
