A rare Sea Service Pattern Flintlock Brass Barreled Blunderbuss by John Vaughan of London and dated 1741

This rare sea service brass barreled flintlock blunderbuss has a 15 1/2" swamped barrel marked "LONDON" and also towards the muzzle "LONDON & BRIGHTON, No. 16." This would indicate that after it was taken out of service with the Royal Navy it was acquired by or turned over to the Royal Coach Service in one of its' most popular runs going from London to the south coast town of Brighton. John Vaughan had a shop in London from 1714 until his death in 1746. He was elected Master of the London Gunmakers Company in 1737. He was known as a major contractor to Ordinance of the Royal Navy. The gun itself has seen much use but remains in remarkable original condition. The walnut stock has only normal expected wear and has its' original finish with lovely old patina. The action is tight. Overall, a rare early sea service blunderbuss with a wonderful later life as a coaching blundebuss.
