A Rare Silver Presentation Pitcher Won by the Sloop 'ATLANTIC' of the New York Yacht Club on June 9, 1887

The first time this important NYYC silver trophy has ever been on the market! Handed down by descent from the original part-owner of the sloop William Allen Putnam (1847-1936). The sloop 'Atlantic' was launched in 1886. She was 95.1' LOA, 82.1 LWL and was designed by Phillip Ellsworth and built by J.F.Mumm. At the NYYC annual Regatta on June 9, 1887, the ATLANTIC beat GALATEA and PRISCILLA. These sloops were known as the 90 footer class. In 1886, ATLANTIC competed in the America's Cup trial races against MAYFLOWER, PURITAN and PRISCILLA. MAYFLOWER won the right to defend the Cup. The ATLANTIC was known and recorded as the last "rule of thumb" yacht, her model having been whittled from a block of wood by Ellsworth. Height: 14" Diameter of base: 6 1/2". Condition: The base rim has a small vertical dent and several small dings. The pitcher has been lightly polished and the original patina remains in tact.
