A Very Fine 19th century Surveyor's Vernier Compass by William & Lewis Gurley, Troy, N.Y., circa 1865-1876.

This very fine surveyor's vernier compass was made by the Gurley brothers, who were the largest manufacturer of engineering and surveying instruments in the U.S, founded in 1852. It retains much of its' original lacquer finish and the silvered dial is in near mint condition. The dovetailed mahogany carrying box retains the original trade label of the Gurleys and dates to pre-1876. The only thing lacking are the tripod legs which can be easily obtained. A very handsome and complete instrument!
