The lockplate is signed 'T Green 08' for Thomas Green 1708. The Royal cypher of Queen Anne with crown over A R is located under the pan. The overall length of the blunderbuss is 28 1/2" with the heavy gauge brass barrel measuring only 13 1/2". The diameter of the flared muzzle is 1 3/4". Sea service features include the hammered flat nailed butt plate folded over at the top and secured by nails, the vertical tang screw, the trigger guard with classis "ball type" forward finial and finally no bridle on the frizzen. The brass furniture is Board of Ordnance pattern. The molded and carved 'regulation pattern' walnut fullstock has an age crack running from the tip of the forestock to the frizzen spring, a total of 10 1/2". There is also a small section of wood replaced around the barrel tang. Note: Thomas Green worked in an area close to the Tower of London known as Minories. He was apprenticed to Edward Nicolson in 1686 and was admitted as a freeman of the Gunmakers' company in 1693. Green was Gunmaker to Ordnance between 1697-1715 right when this blunderbuss was made. In 1720 Green was elected Master of the Gunmakers' Company. He died in 1728. This is an extremely early sea service blunderbuss, the earliest being recorded around 1685-1690.
