An exceptionally rare 18th century Ship Chandler's Trade Sign in the form of a French Naval Captain looking through his octant circa 1750.

I am not aware of an earlier example on the market. In fact, in all of my years in dealing in fine and rare maritime objects and works of art, I have never seen another one which dates to circa 1750. Features include his traditional cockaded tricorn hat, powdered wig tied with a bow, regulation red braided waistcoat, blue tunic with gold braided red cuffs, breeches, white stockings and buckled black shoes. The overall condition is quite good with the expected losses to the painted surfaces and losses to his finger tips. The figure itself has been mounted onto a custom made stand, total weight being approximately 70 pounds. The figure measures 55" high with its' stand, 13 1/2" wide and 38" deep, including his sextant.
