An historic DeWolfe family of Bristol, RI., brass bound mahogany lap desk circa 1840

This historic brass bound mahogany writing box (lap desk) has the initials of the original owner in script on a brass plaque on the lid (MADW) for Mark Anthony DeWolfe (the 2nd) as well as a handwritten note attached to the interior. The DeWolfe family settled in Bristol, RI in the 17th century and quickly became one of the wealthiest families in the state. Research over the internet has yielded a rich history of this famous family. The interior opens to reveal a green felt writing surface (not original) and two compartments.
