Job Terry (1783-1861) was master of the whaling ship GOOD RETURN out of New Bedford beginning in 1821. He made a total of 9 voyages as master of that ship. In Richard Dana's book "Two Years Before The Mast" written in 1840, Captain Terry is described as being known in every port in the Pacific. Portraits of he and his wife are owned by the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The ebony octant itself comes with its' original stepped and fited mahogany case with the maker's label on the inside of he lid.
