An Historically Important late 18th century Miniature Six-Draw Telescope signed CARY, LONDON

SOLD

Engraved "Hon'ble Capt'n Duncan," this fine telescope measures only 3 1/2" when closed and extends to 15". The 7/8" objective lens and four-element eyepiece system gives a sharp clear image. About 50% of the original lacquer finish remains and the overall condition is fine throughout. The original owner was most likely Adam Duncan (1731-1804), who entered the Navy in 1746, serving with distinction on various ships and rising to Viscount. His son Henry, Knighted by the King and awarded a K.C.H. (Knight Commander), was also a Captain in the Navy and died in 1835.
