The magnificent City of Rome is generally regarded as the most beautiful steamship ever built for the North Atlantic passenger trade. It was built for the prestigious Inman Line by Barrow Shipbuilding of England in 1881. She has the distinction of being the first three-funnel steamship to operate the North Atlantic. In 1898 she was chartered by the U.S.Government and used to repatriate 1,667 Spanish prisoners-of-war. She was sold in 1901 and broken up in 1902.
The model has a wood hull built in lifts with black topsides and a varnished wood bottom. the cabin structures are also varnished with details scored and drawn to show cabin doors and portholes. Other details include decorative floral motif on the stern, lifelines, bollards, anchor winch, anchors and chains, ladders, skylights, running lights, ventilators, lifeboats, signal cannons and funnels. The ship has four masts and is flying two American flags.
