A Mattapoisett basket made by Helen Gaster circa 1972

Helen was a student of Gladys Ellis, the originator of the 'Mattapoisett' basket. The ivory plaque on the lid features a sailing ship and underneath, on the inside of the lid is the name 'Irene L. Daley' the original owner and an employee of the consignor's family. The basket measures 9" wide by 7" high. The carrying handle and the other mounts appear to be whalebone. Overall, a good example of a seldom seen New England basket.
