A diminutive ebony framed mariner's octant circa 1815-1835 possibly used aboard the Trident, a whaling ship from New Bedford.

This beautiful little (5" index arm) ebony framed mariner's octant retains its' original oak stepped case with retailer's label for William Holliwell of Liverpool (1795-1849). Holliwell is known to have sold marine instruments to ship chandlers in Massachusetts in the early 19th century. In addition, it has an old ink inscription for the "TRIDENT," a New Bedford whaling ship built in 1828. The name C L Fepter (?) 1846 is also inscribed. A wonderful historic whaling era instrument.
