A fine 19th century small boat compass by Robert Merrill of New York circa 1835-1850

Robert Merrill (1804-1876) is considered to be the most famous American compass maker of the 19th century. He was born in Newburyport, Mass., but worked primarily in New York city. The pine carrying box is stamped with the word "BRASS" and is missing its' lid. It measures 6" square.
