A RARE and IMPORTANT American boxed compass made by the inventor Edward Richie circa 1862

Edward Ritchie (1814-1895) invented and patented this particular style of compass in Boston in 1862. This is perhaps the earliest known example dating to that period. The compass is signed "RITCHIE BOSTON." It comes with its' original mahogany box with brass fittings. Height: 6.5" Width: 11" Compass diameter: 8"
