A rare lifeboat compass from the S.S. Evangeline circa 1927-1945

Built in 1927 and 365' long, the S.S. Evangeline was commissioned by the Eastern Steamship Line for the Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to Boston service. When the United States entered into World War II, the ship was reqiusitioned as a troop ship. It ferried troops from San Francisco to the Pacific theatre of war. The compass itself is unmarked but the bottom of the box is inscribed in ink "S.S. Evangeline." The box measured 4 3/4" square.
