This rare pair of Presidential presentation binoculars is engraved as follows: "From the President of the United States to Captain W. Thompson of the British Ship SS Durham City for his humane services in effecting the rescue of the Officers and Crew of the American Schooner Alice T. Boardman, October 6, 1894." Made by LeMaire of Paris, this rare pair of binoculars is aluminum bodied with alligator skin covering and a lignum vitae focus knob. There is some flaking to the black paint used around the eyepieces but otherwise they are in great condition with excellent optics. Length fully extended: 9". Historical Note: Preliminary research has uncovered an article in the New York Times dated April 6, 1879 as follows: "The Schooner Alice T. Boardman, travelling from Calais to New York with a cargo of lumber, dragged ashore at Vineyard Haven."
