This rare sextant was made by Matthew Berge who took over the business from Jesse Ramsden. Both are considered to be amongst the most important scientific instrument makers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This particular example is in 'mint' condition retaining nearly all of its' original lacquer finish. The index arm measures 3 1/2". There is also a hinged ivory handle on the back of the frame. The red leather case has a velvet interior. The case is complete but the top has a 1" blemish where it looks like someone may have laid a cigarette on it causing a burn hole. These tiny sextants were known to have been taken on exploring expeditions and were used for surveying rather than actual navigation. A true museum quality piece.
