An Historic 18th century British Naval Captain's Telescope

SOLD

Made by Jeremiah and Walter Watkins, 5 Charing Cross, London, circa 1784-1798, this historic scope is engraved with name of its first owner, Capt. T (Thomas) Affleck. Captain Affleck was sentenced by Court Martial to be 'incapable of ever commanding a Kings Ship' and was put at the bottom of the 'half pay' list for life. What the actual circumstances of his Court martial were are not known. However, it is clear that what ever he did or did not do was as serious as it gets. The scope itself is missing its eyepiece and the wood barrel has a few cracks. The optics are okay but not great.
