A fine and historic brass barreled blunderbuss made by William Jover of London circa 1760-1780 and inscribed "The George Inn, Southwark"

SOLD

William Jover worked in London from 1750 to 1786. This historic weapon dates to circa 1760-1780. It measures 32" long and has a brass two stage barrel going from octagonal to round and terminating with a flared muzzle having a 1 1/2" diameter. Both the butt plate and side plate are engraved. The barrel is marked 'JOVER - LONGACRE - LONDON.' Historical note: The George Inn dates back to medieval times and is now owned by the National Trust for Historic Properties. After a serious fire burnt down most of Southwark, the Inn was rebuilt in 1676. Charles Dickens was a frequent visitor there. This gun was most likely kept behind the counter to provide protection for coach travelers and guests of the Inn.
