A fine and rare 18th century Irish flintlock coaching blunderbuss with rococco mounts circa 1775

SOLD

This exceptionally fine and rare piece measures 30" overall and has a 15" round brass barrel with a flared muzzle and walnut stock. The barrel is engraved at the breech and has the appropriate proof marks. Next on the barrel is the engraved address of the maker William Guinness, "107 James Street, DUBLIN." Slightly further along the top of the barrel is engraved "DUBLIN * CORK * BELFAST." The shaped brass butt plate is also wonderfully engraved. Below the barrel tang and on top of the wrist is an attractive rococco style brass cartouche engraved "Greer & Anderson, NEWRY", presumably for the coaches agents (Newry is 30 miles from Belfast in Northern Ireland). The beautiful brass side plate is also of the rococco style. Lastly, the trigger guard is engraved and ends with a torch finial. There are two further, later added stamps, both being "DC-2090". Beginning around 1820 all guns in Ireland had to be registered with the government and this stamp dates from this period. Condition: There is an almost unnoticeable 3" splice below the muzzle. The ramrod may be a period replacement. The action is tight and crisp. Overall, a fine, early Irish coaching piece worthy of any museum collection.
