Most of the known 18th century English Grenadier hangers have English and Welsh county names on them, this one being "CHESHIRE." The unit or Regimental number appears to be 7/61. This particular example was made by Samuel Harvey (1698-1778), sword cutler of Birmingham, as indicated in his trademark stamp, an engraved running fox, having his initials S H., and dates to circa 1750-1768. A very similar example is illustrated in George Neumann's "Battle Weapons of the American Revolution" published in 1998, page 307, photograph 10.ss. This particular example appears to have had much battle usuage as both the quillon and the foremost 3/4" tip of the blade have been broken off. The overall length is now approximately 30". Further reseach will most likely lead to where this sword saw action.
