This highly decorative silver-mounted percussion frontier or plains rifle was made by William McCleland of Naffanees, Indiana, circa 1860-1862. The .36 cal. gun has a 41" octagonal rifled barrel which is engraved in script on the top "W. McCleland". The overall length of the rifle is 56 1/2". The gun is adorned with a German silver four-piece patchbox, silver flash protector, silver blade front sight, silver nosecap, silver ferules and over 35 additional pieces of silver inlay including an eagle. It also comes with double set triggers and a brass triggerguard and buttplate. The barrel is nice and smooth with a dark plum patina as is the lock plate marked "Warranted." A truly impressive piece.
