This seated half-length high relief marble portrait of General George Washington is set into a stand-up mahogany frame. The portrait is quite similar to a painting of Washington done by James Sharples (1751-1811) in 1796. The reverse is engraved "Presented to Major Henry Wilson/U.S. Army/By His Nephew D.G.Wilson 1835." H 8" W 6 1/4". NOTE: Wilson was born in 1779 and died in 1885. He was active in the Seminole Wars in the 1830's as well as the Mexican War in the 1840's. He was commander of Fort Towson in Oklahoma and was acting Governor of Vera Cruz during the Mexican War.
