A 19th century Ship Captain's 'Hailing' Trumpet with presentation inscription dated 1845

SOLD

Measuring 18" long, this ship captain's speaking or hailing trumpet appears to be made of silver and is inscribed as follows: "Presented to Capt. Hans Holdt, Commander of Danish Ship Pollux of Apenrade as a Token of esteem and friendship, Schmidt & Balchen, New York November 1845." At the bottom is the name of the maker or retailer 'A P Thompson, 309 1/2 Broadway, N Y'. Below the inscription is a coat-of-arms, probably European. Apenrade was part of Prussia at that time and this may be a Prussian coat-of-arms. Condition: The curved mouthpiece has been dented and is slightly askew. There are also about 4-5 other smaller dents but none of them are serious or detract from the attractiveness of this rare speaking trumpet.
