Probably the best sailor made box I have ever seen!! Made circa 1865-1880, this fabulous box has all the bells and whistles and is in original untouched condition. The whalebone keyhole escutcheon is in the shape of a heart and flower. The lid has an exotic hardwood inlaid compass rose surmounted by inlaid flags. All four sides are wonderfully decorated with applied moldings and fruitwood inlays. The interior lid features a set of silver bullion British Naval officers' rank insignia with thistle motif. The interior lid opens to reveal a compartment for documents and letters. Inside the box are small drawers for valuables. The interior is lined with its' original decorative paper lining. In all, a most stunning piece of sailor folk art. Width: 19 1/2" Height: 11 1/2" Depth: 12 1/2" Now fitted to a custom made base.
