A fine Portrait Miniature of Capt. Hugh Cameron, One of Nelson's Captains, circa 1810

SOLD

Measuring 3" by 2 1/2", this fine watercolor portrait on ivory is housed in what appears to be a 10-15 k. gold case (I haven't had it tested, this is only a guess) with a blue enamel oval inset into the back with gold initials in script "H C." There is a period scrap of paper glued on the the top of the back which says " Capt. Hugh Cameron, shot at the siege of Guadelupe." Capt. Cameron is shown wearing the Order of the Crescent, awarded to significant British Naval Officers during the Napoleonic War. Nelson was wearing his when he was fatally shot during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. This may be the work of Alfred Edward Chalon and it dates to circa 1810.
