Accompanying the mid 19th century model is a 19th century bronze medal issued by the U. S. Mint to commemorate the dramatic naval battle between the 'ENTERPRISE' and the British Brig 'BOXER' in September 1813. In that famous battle, both commanders were killed in action, Lt. William Burrows, acting Captain of the Enterprise, and the British captain. In the end, the American ship captured the British ship. The Enterprise was originally a schooner built in 1799 by Henry Spencer in Baltimore. She was re-rigged as a brig in May 1812 and cruised along the Eastern seaboard during the first year of the War of 1812. Height: 6" Length: 6"
