A WWII Japanese Admiralty scale model of the destroyer “Akebono“ sunk by American planes in Manila Bay in 1944.

This an actual scale model built in 1931 for the Japanese admiralty. Akebono ("Plum Blossom") was a "Special Type 2" destroyer, one of the intermediate group Fubiki class. The ship was completed on July 31, 1931 at Fujinagata. It carried six 5-inch guns in twin turrets and nine 24-inch torpedo tubes (the first in the world). It was 1680 tons and had a top speed of 38 knots. She was sunk by U.S. planes in an air raid over Manila Bay on November 13, 1944. The model is made of metal and measures 42 inches long. It was originally electrified. It was given to Major Ben Locke, who served on Gen. Douglas MacArthurs' staff in Japan in 1946.
