An American Silver Cup presented to 'A.H. Stilwell for Successfully raising the Brig Charles H. Frost, November 15, 1856'

SOLD

Made by the firm of R & W Wilson of Philadelphia, this extremely fine silver cup is engraved as follows: "To A. H. Stilwell by his friends as an acknowledgement of his Energy and perserverance in Successfully raising the BRIG CHARLES H. FROST, Philadelphia Nov. 15, 1856." The ship was sailing from Trinidad to Philadelphia when she was sunk off Cape Antonio (Cuba) in February 1856. Cape Antonio was an area which saw heavy pirate activity during the 18th and early 19th century. Many ships were seized, their crews killed or sold and the ships sunk. This may have been the fate of the Charles H. Frost. H 4 1/2".
