Made of bone this wonderful and rare implement was used for sliding over a uniform button in order to polish it without getting the uniform dirty. The name of the soldier "John McKinley" is in a banner in the center. Below is an ID number 2083 followed by 99th Regiment. At the top is a charming depiction of King James II (reigned 1685-1688) follwed by a crown and the Union Jack in polycrome. At the bottom is a Scottish thistle and flower. The 99th Regiment (Duke of Edinburgh's) was formed in 1824 and remained independent until 1881. It is obvious from the decoration that McKinley was of Scottish ancestry and of the Jacobite persuasion. This is a real Museum rarity! Length: 7 1/2"
