A Fine 19th Century American Scrimshawed Whale's Tooth With Wonderful Eagle and Shield circa 1850

SOLD

Measuring 6 1/8" standing height and over 7" lateral length, this beautifully curved tooth has wonderful color and patina. The American eagle with shield surmounts crossed swords and a pair of pistols. The reverse side features a potted plant with foliage. The entire bottom is surrounded by a geometric border. The tooth was cut so that the root cavity does not exist--leaving just one solid piece of whale ivory! A superb tooth weighing 1 pound 6 ounces.
